Language Discrimination and Political Rights of Urdu Speaking People in Pakistan

My this article covers language discrimination and political rights of Urdu speaking people in Pakistan and cities like Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi. Urdu is national languages of Pakistan and considered symbol of unity of the country and people. Urdu speaking people are mixed ethnic descendants of Arabs, Iranian, Turkish, Pashto and other languages speakers of Indian people. Basically I am English writer since it is easy to write. Secondly it is first international language and one of the primary official language of Pakistan. Urdu language news, Urdu language poetry and use of Urdu dictionary is not only common in Pakistan but around the world. Many times I speak English, Punjabi and other languages. Majority of Pakistani people speak Urdu. Although majority of civilized and educated people speak Urdu yet I felt bias against Urdu. I have evidential hypothesis that I am facing persecution explained on this website due to the fact that often I am Urdu speaking. I did not get government employment. It is very worrying situation since it is language discrimination. People should not discriminate languages since languages are just means of communication. Good and bad people are present in every society. What is the benefit of creation of Pakistan if different language speaker cannot live together peacefully? There are only small numbers of languages which are being spoken in Pakistan yet there is considerable language discrimination. No country can survive in such circumstances. In advanced countries hundreds of language speakers live together side by side.

I have felt ethnic and language discrimination and violence. Although there are severe punishments for such discrimination and violence yet such criminals are persecuting people without any fear. Very honestly I question benefit of the creation of Pakistan when we did not get our most basic rights here. Even Indian government keeps muslims in better conditions. Glory of muslim Indian film actors and politicians is clear example. I am writing this because I failed to get my fundamental rights despite doing all humanely possible efforts.

Probably I lost my career due to language discrimination. I would have been senior government officer if I had been Punjabi or Pathan nationalist. Urdu speaking people settled in minority provinces like Punjab or K.P rarely get government jobs. My cousins in Lahore & foreign countries are on very high posts. However, they always speak Punjabi and support Punjab. It is also the reason of their success although they are very talented & intelligent. My Aunty like Punjabis more despite she is Urdu speaking. She speak Punjabi with Punjabi women and give a lot of charity to poor women irrespective of any language discrimination. They are like this because they spent their whole lives in Lahore. I also have no grudge with Punjabis but just I wanted to keep my language identity as my late father always spoke Urdu.
Some hard people deny equal rights for Urdu speaking people that nullify ideology of Pakistan. As an Urdu speaking person from Punjab, I never got job or any opportunity. We get no benefit of creation of Pakistan. Even Indian Muslims are leading better lives than us. Already we are living in miserable poverty. Persecution is added to our lifelong deprivation, poverty and exploitation. There is not a single government employee in all of our family.

Pashtuns are interesting people and strict nationalist. In Tarbela Dam, one of my Pathan friend told me that we are pukhtoons first and Muslims later. It is the big reason of their success in Pakistan that they are united race.
In my life experience, I found that Pukhtoons are big nationalist and I found same here in Lahore. I could not make former N.W.F.P province domicile despite living there for 25 years so I could not get admission in government engineering university, M.B.A or M.C.S nor got job on quota. Ironically, people get USA, Britain, Canada nationality if they live there for more than 5 years. Yet I married a poor Pathan girl because all of boys and girls who came to me for tuition were Pashtuns.

Majority always crush minority religious or linguistic! Urdu speaking people are very small minority in Punjab. Partition of India and creation of Pakistan for Urdu speaking migrants mohajirs proved “Aasman Se Gira Khajoor Mein Atka” (Original meaning is fallen from the sky and stuck on a palm Tree. This is an idiom in Hindi/ Urdu, which means, “Someone is coming out from one trouble but gets caught into another”)
Urdu speaking community has representation in Sindh but no representation in Punjab so there should be separate electorate for Urdu speaking community in Punjab. It is almost impossible for any Urdu speaking person to win any seat in Punjab when they even do not get high government jobs in Punjab. Before creation of Pakistan, Muslims of India struggled for their justified right of separate electorate as Muslim minority was scattered across India. Finally, all Indian congress accepted Muslims demand of separate electorate.

For those Urdu speaking people who migrated from India at the time of partition of India and settled in Punjab, Pakistan proved dead end. Instead of getting rights, our generations are facing persecution. Pakistani and Indian Prime Ministers and governments should agree of some complimentary package for such deprived people like me whose families suffered losses due to migration.

Here, I want to tell how tolerant I am to people of other languages. I have no bias or grudge for any language. Good and bad people exist in every society, language and religion. I analyze things on merit. I just check whether person is good or not. My old friends In Tarbela Dam were mostly Punjabis and Pashtuns. Only few were Urdu speaking. We purchase everything from Lahore including home appliances without any discrimination of language. I just see good person and proper products. Almost half of my father’s and mother’s larger families are married to Punjabis. My stepmother was Hindko speaking from Abbottabad. Even I am very tolerant rather friendly to English speaking foreigners. English is also our other first language. It is only deprivation and persecution which let me stand for my political rights.
Despite being Urdu speaking person, I acknowledge that many Urdu speaking people are little selfish and care only about their wives and families. Only some of them become true friend. Some of them are caring and nice families.

English is official while Urdu is National language of Pakistan. Bias exists against both languages especially against English being foreign language. There are many people at high lucrative positions who can not even speak Urdu language properly. These people promote regional language and specific interest groups. Since employment is provided on the basis of links, nepotism, political affiliation and bribe these people ensure position for their children through their regional interest groups.
In previous century Urdu was evolved due to interaction of various languages and civilizations. Such an evolution is not taking place due to bias and preservation of local languages and interests. English language and regional languages words should be added and accepted in Urdu for making it more universal and acceptable language. However, such evolution takes hundreds of year.
